8 Reasons Why You Should Use Your iPhone Camera To Click Blog + Instagram Photos

Apr 24 2016

Did you know that the iPhone camera is the most popular camera in the world. Here are 8 reasons to start using your iPhone to capture high quality photos for your blog and business.
When it comes to high quality photos, what’s the first thing we think of? a DSLR! Isn’t it? I have been a huge fan of DSLR cameras and have used them extensively in the last two years for all my blogging and business needs. But guess what’s the most popular camera in the world? You got it – its the iPhone camera. For the last 10 months (ever since I got an iPhone), I’ve been experimenting a lot with iPhone photography and I can safely and surely say I am in LOVE.

So what about using an iPhone for your blog and business needs? If you are anything like what I was an year ago, you are probably shaking your head in disagreement. But hang in there! I love my DSLR, but here are 8 reasons why you should be using your iPhone to click photos for your blog and Instagram!

This post is not to convince you to stop using your DSLRs ( I love using mine) , its just to explore the brilliant possibilities of using an iPhone to capture high quality photos.

Also,I created a comprehensive guide of the apps and equipment you need to shoot photos on your iPhone camera. You can download it right here.

Zero cost:

Something that makes Photography a scary passion to pursue is the expensive gear that it requires. A high quality camera, lenses, accessories etc. can all quickly add up to dig a hole in your pocket. But if you are using an iPhone, there really is no (extra) cost to start clicking high quality photos with it. You already have the equipment, you just need to learn to use it effectively!

Easy to carry, Easy to use:

Imagine having to carry a DSLR everywhere you go? If you are big on posting photos on Instagram, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The bulkiness and weight of DSLR’s makes it hard to carry them everywhere we go. On the other hand, your iPhone is super lightweight , fits in your pocket and is something that you already carry with you everywhere. Now if you want to click pictures of your food in a restaurant, to click pictures of a beach sunset during your travel or to just click pictures of beautiful flowers you see on a long drive – its easy! Just pull out your iPhone and snap away. iPhone makes it super easy to capture pictures on the go without the hassle of carrying heavy, bulky equipment.

High resolution + quality:

Now you might be thinking – but what about the image quality? I am not going to argue. Technically speaking, a DSLR definitely performs better than an iPhone. But let’s be honest here. Just using a DSLR doesn’t promise you great photos, does it? Whatever the tool may be, how you use it determines the quality of your photos. So if you learn how to use the iPhone camera well, you are most probably going to be taking better photos than most people do with a DSLR.

Also, what makes a DSLR better than an iPhone camera is its larger sensor and ability to take good photos even in low light situations. So in good lighting, photos you take with your iPhone are not much different from the ones you take on your DSLR.  So you can definitely achieve super high quality photos with your iPhone as well.

Can be expanded into a DSLR:

Now what if I said you could potentially turn your iPhone camera into a DSLR? Yes you can! With the help of certain apps and accessories [ that we are going to discuss in another post soon] you can equip your iPhone camera with the superpowers of a DSLR. You can attach amazing, powerful lenses to your iPhone to increase the photo quality. Also apps like Camera+ and Pro Camera 7 add many controls to your iPhone camera that make it comparable to a DSLR. Apart from this, there are also several photo editing apps available for iPhone that can process your iPhone photos to the same level as of a DSLR.

Easy to learn:

While the insane number of settings and controls of a DSLR (most of which you’ll not use at the beginning) can be intimidating, the iPhone camera has an easier learning curve, making it the perfect choice for beginners. The iPhone camera is simple and straight forward to learn and is one of the best ways to understand the basics of photography without being overwhelmed by the high level, advanced stuff.

Quick and instant photos:

Lets say you spot this beautiful sunset and want to capture the colors of the sky in a photo. Now by the time you open, switch on and set up your DSLR – the sunset would have probably be long gone. When you are using a DSLR, you need to be a lot more planned which makes it almost impossible to take photos spontaneously. With an iPhone you can click photos in an instant. The setup time is almost zero, you can go from your pocket to a photo within a few seconds.

I use my DSLR for most blog photos, but whenever I am out and about I just can’t be bothered to lug around a heavy camera in a big bag so I snap most pictures with my iPhone. I really enjoyed reading this post!

Kelly Knows It | A lifestyle blog

    • Hi Kelly 🙂 Thats super interesting. So do you use your iPhone photos for the blog too? And mostly what are the problems you face while using your iPhone (vs DSLR) to take blog photos? Your input would be super useful!

  • My instagram photos are about 90% iphone photos. The only time I use my DSLR photos on instagram is in relation to a blog post. The camera is the main reason why I chose my iphone 6s over others.

    • Hey Lena! How are you? I completely agree – the iPhone has the best camera out there in smartphones. Which DSLR do you have? And what do you like about it that the iPhone doesnt offer?

      • I have a Canon EOS 40D Which is pretty old these days but I like using it. It’s better for product photography I find, I just have more control over the settings.

        • Ah nice! There are some apps which give you more control on an iPhone too – I ll share them soon with you 🙂 Keep an eye out. Thanks Lena!

  • I just started my blog and am happy to read that I can use my phone camera. Can’t wait for your next photography posts!

    • Yay! They are coming your way soon Yasmin 🙂 I l be doing an iPhone Photography series!

  • iphone cameras are great!

    • Yayy! So awesome to hear that Parie! You have a lovely blog – look forward to keeping in touch!

  • I use both my DSLR and iPhone 6+ for blog pics, depending on the circumstances. I’ve not explored the world of Instagram quite yet but you’ve encouraged me through your various posts to take the plunge soon. 🙂 Thanks Chaitra!!

    • Hey Cathy 🙂 How are you? Yes definitely try Instagram – love the creative community there. Plus its a good way to try more iPhone photography!

      • You have no idea how much your call several weeks ago encouraged me. Since then, I’ve switched my site to WordPress and beginning next month, I’m dropping the monthly theme (as you suggested) and focusing on my new niche, creativity. Thanks again, Chaitra!

        • That is so amazing to hear Cathy <3 You are the best! Wish you all the success with the new blog – good luck!

  • Loved this article, Chaitra! I use my iPhone for all my blog and instagram photos. I don’t own a DSLR. However I did not know about the apps you mentioned above. I’m going to check out Camera+ now!!

    • Hey Maritza! I am so glad to hear that you use your iPhone for your blog photos too. Amazing! Yes do try Camera+ – its brilliant. I am soon going to share a post about it too – will keep you updated! 🙂

  • Really detailed article. Love it 🙂

  • Loved the article Chaitra. I am currently using advance point n shoot for my blog photos.

Though Iphone is an easy option i somehow find it difficult to transfer photos from my mobile to laptop :/

    • Hi Rajani! Have you tried using dropbox to transfer photos from your iPhone to laptop? I use it and it works perfectly. the dropbox app is free and easy to use! Thanks so much for reading 🙂

  • I use my android +1 phone quite a lot of the time, and sometimes use a dslr. I have found a couple of helpful apps like viscose that make editing in the phone easier. PS.. Everyone assumes we are all using iPhones… I’m not convinced that they provide the quality that the cost implies vs that of other devices.

    • Ah had never heard of Viscose – I ll try it out! Thanks for the recommendation 🙂 Some of the android phones have great cameras too. Are you using Samsung?

      • Oops. That should be VSCO! clearly my phone is predicting/correcting words based on my fabric searches!

  • Cheryl Pullins

I did an entire photoshoot with my iPhone 6Plus. We over shot. We were amateurs playing around to see how it worked. I got some amazing images from using the phone. I take lots of photos with my iPhone to create backgrounds for my quotes. Yep! My own stock photog! Great article Chaitra! Going to get one of the apps you mentioned and will be waiting for the next post. xoxo Keep shining!

    • Hey Cheryl! Thanks so much for reading 🙂 I am so excited to hear that you did a photoshoot with your iPhone. Its amazing how much you can do with it! Keep rocking and I ll keep you updated with new iPhone posts! xx

  • I’m going to be travelling around Europe in a couple of months, and I probably won’t have space to pack my DSLR. Now I’m trying to convince myself that my iPhone camera will be enough to document the trip, but maybe I should check out some of these apps and invest in some lens as well!

    Mel // izzipenelope

    • Hey Melissa! Yup, absolutely. Use your iPhone – I am sure you ll take some breathtaking pictures with it! <3 Thanks so much for reading! Have fun in Europe!
