PinkPot started out as a lifestyle blog a little less than 2 years ago. Until the beginning of 2015, I was writing blog posts basically about beauty and my life in general. During that time, I developed a genuine interest in design and photography, the two visual elements associated with blogging. As I engaged more in the online world, I wanted to build my own business online. Long story short, I took the leap 4 months ago and quit my job to build a business on the web.

Today I wanted to share with you a few things that helped me transition from a hobby blog to a full time business that earns me an income now. It has been a great journey, I’ve loved every bit of the struggle and I hope this helps any of you who are looking to make an income online in 2016:
It was last December when I decided I would quit my job the coming August to pursue an online business. I worked on building 5 blogger templates in January and started a pop-up Etsy shop in February. The day I opened shop, I was sweetly surprised that I had about 2 template sales and 2 enquiries for custom design. How? I realized it was all thanks to my blog. Because of the audience I had been (unconsciously!) building through my blog, I had people who were interested right away in what I was selling. I did not have to look for clients because they were already there as a result of my blog. See, how blogging is so awesome? :)
If you want to start a business, my number 1 recommendation for you is to start a blog. Seriously. Blog with purpose and intention. Write content that helps and engages your tribe, builds a community and creates an online presence for your brand. Write content that directly relates with your business and attracts people who share the same interest and passion as you. So when you are ready to launch your product or service, you already have an engaged community who are interested (and probably waiting!) to buy from you!
When you are writing a blog just for hobby, since its out of your passion, you have limited vision of what you want to share. But when you start a business, its important to create a long term vision for yourself, your blog & your business.
This vision can stem from your passion - where you create a product or offer a service based on your skills or it can stem from your audience - what product or service that you can create could be useful for them. So creating a plan is very necessary. You need to plan and take action based on your vision for your business. Write blog content that will attract your ideal audience, help them and in turn grow your business too.
When I started my business, my blog content changed too. As a result of my growing interest in design, photography and blogging, I started sharing more posts about these topics. I gradually decreased the frequency of my beauty and lifestyle posts and pumped up the content on topics that were related to my business.
If you have already have a blog that you want to transition into one that aids your business, the best way to do it is to just go for it. I was initially scared that I would lose the audience that I had built (with so much difficulty), and I did! The engagement and comments on my blog decreased, but on the other hand I also gained new audience who were genuinely interested about my business, design services and passion for photography.
Its your blog at the end of the day, and its best to be true to yourself and your audience and do what really interests you and what you are passionate about. If you love what you do, and do what you love - you will build an audience who loves it too. And guess what? They will bring their friends and spread the word about you too!
A business can never exist without people, YOUR people. When I changed my niche completely from beauty to creative business, I had absolutely no connections in the new industry I was going to be a part of. But we all have to start somewhere. I connected with designers and creatives that were doing similar things online via social media. A nice little tweet or an email goes a long way in getting you noticed.
Some of the best ways to connect with people in your niche is twitter, blog comments and email. Write a simple email introducing yourself - it can work wonders and land big opportunities for you, I promise.
An year ago, I was only hoping to turn my blog into a business. I wasn't sure if it would work out, I wasn't confident I would be able to quit my job. But its completely possible to earn an income online and build a sustainable business.
